Shropshire weekend itinerary

Shropshire is one of the most underrated places in England but yet, there is so much to see!

It truly is so beautiful! There are cute small towns and villages, loads of black and white Tudor buildings as well as many hiking opportunities.

It’s full of character and an easy weekend to organise, especially from Manchester, Liverpool or Birmingham.

You can find below my recommendations for a weekend in Shropshire (with a base in Shrewsbury)

    Where to Stay in Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury makes a great base for the whole weekend. It’s a beautiful town to visit and there are loads of restaurants and bars so I’d recommend staying both nights here.

    Some good options include:

🏨 Prince Rupert Hotel – A historic hotel right in the centre, in a beautiful street, Butchers Row.

🏨 Darwin’s Townhouse – Stylish and contemporary, with a lovely garden and an excellent breakfast.

    Friday Night – Shrewsbury

    Shrewsbury at night

Start your weekend in Shrewsbury, one of England’s best-preserved medieval towns.

The historic centre is packed with black-and-white timber-framed buildings, hidden passageways and independent shops.

There are loads of independent restaurants and bars in Shrewsbury, making it a great place for your Friday evening.

πŸ₯— Food recommendations: CSONS is a great restaurant. They serve seasonal and local products.
The Henry Tudor Inn is also a beautiful and historic pub.

    Both of these are dog-friendly.

Saturday – Ironbridge, Much Wenlock & Shrewsbury

    Ironbridge

    Ironbridge

In the morning, drive to the beautiful village of Ironbridge, near Telford.

It’s home to the world’s first cast-iron bridge and is widely regarded as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.

You can walk on the bridge (there is still the old toll house), check out the local shops, get a pie or a coffee or even walk along the river.

    Much Wenlock

    Much Wenlock

From Ironbridge, drive another 15 minutes to Much Wenlock, a small and charming market town.

    Highlights include:

    • The ruins of Much Wenlock Priory
    • The medieval Guildhall in the square
    • Loads of independent and quirky shops
    • Traditional pubs and tearooms for a meal or a drink

Once you are done, return to Shrewsbury to explore the town during the day.

    Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury is definitely one of the best towns in the whole of the UK. I love how picturesque it is with the cobblestones and the Tudor buildings.

Here are some ideas of things to do in Shrewsbury:

    • Walk through The Quarry and along the River Severn
    • Visit Shrewsbury Castle
    • Visit Shrewsbury Abbey
    • Visit Shrewsbury Prison (that’s quite a quirky thing to do)
    • Roam around the town centre

Sunday – Stokesay Castle & Ludlow

    Stokesay Castle

    Stokesay Castle

On Sunday, leave Shrewsbury and head to Stokesay Castle (this should take around 40 minutes).

Despite its name, it’s more of a fortified medieval manor house than a defensive castle.

It’s one of the most beautiful timber-framed buildings in the UK and something you really shouldn’t miss!

It’s managed by the English Heritage which means that you can get in for free if you are a member.

    Ludlow

    Ludlow

Drive about 15 minutes south to Ludlow.

Ludlow is one of the prettiest towns in Shropshire and is well known for its food scene. The streets are full of independent delis, bakeries and traditional shops.

    Make sure to visit:

    • Ludlow Castle
    • The historic market square
    • The local food shops and cafΓ©s for lunch
    • Go to Whitcliffe Common Nature Reserve for beautiful views of the town (and snap great pictures!)

Personal recommendation: I loved the Rose & Crown pub. It’s tucked away in a little alleyway and it feels like you’re stepping back in time.

    • Ironbridge β†’ Much Wenlock: 15 minutes
